Yoga

The word yoga means "union" in Sanskrit, the language of ancient India where yoga originated. We can think of the union occurring between the mind, body and spirit.
What is commonly referred to as "yoga" can be more accurately described by the Sanskrit word  “asana”, which refers to the practice of physical postures or poses.
While stretching is certainly involved in yoga, the practice is really about creating balance in the body and mind through developing both strength and flexibility. 


HATHA YOGA (definition):

Hatha is a very general term that can encompass many of the physical types of yoga. It is a slow-paced and gentle practice, and can provide a good introduction to the basic yoga poses.

VINYASA YOGA (definition):

Like Hatha, Vinyasa is a general term that is used to describe many different types of classes. Vinyasa, which means breath-synchronized movement, tends to be a more vigorous style based on the performance of a series of poses called “Sun Salutations” in which movement is matched to the breath.



Yoga Classes offered at High Bridge Pilates:


Beginner's Hatha Yoga

A true beginner’s class for all fitness levels - designed for students with absolutely no yoga experience. This methodical introduction to yoga helps students avoid bad habits by learning proper form from the very beginning. Great emphasis is placed on breathing, body awareness, modified poses, and proper alignment. for maximum safety. Class concludes with a 10-15 minute guided meditation.This relaxed and peaceful environment is the perfect place to begin your journey inward.


Vinyasa Yoga

More rigorous than Beginner's Hatha Yoga, this class is designed for students with previous yoga experience (or are currently taking our Intermediate Pilates classes).  Students will need some strength and endurance.
The Vinyasa flow is followed by an extended guided meditation.

Note: Keeping the vinyasa flow uninterrupted is important. So while the cueing for each pose is very clear, it is also very concise. Students who desire additional cueing instruction are encouraged to reserve a spot in our Beginner's Hatha Yoga class.


Couples Yoga – Hatha / Vinyasa Yoga

Partner stretching and Vinyasa yoga with a spiritual emphasis.
Class concludes with a 10-15 minute guided meditation. Great way to get or stay connected in a fun, playful atmosphere. The Saturday 5 PM class kicks off the perfect date night.


Yoga for Men - Vinyasa Yoga

This is a mixed level class, where no previous yoga experience is required. But it is somewhat rigorous. Students will need some strength, endurance, and body awareness.
Class concludes with a 10-15 minute guided meditation.


Meditative Yoga

This class is less physical and more spiritual. Extensive breathing, meditation, relaxation excercises, and chanting.
